Plocamium cartilagineum
Description:
Narrow, compressed, cartilaginous, bright scarlet fronds, to 300 mm long, tufted,
much divided. A ramificação primária é dística
alterna. A ramificação secundária (râmulos) é
em pente ("comblike"). Branching irregularly alternate, branchlets alternately
secund in twos to fives, with acute apices, lowest of each set a simple spur,
others increasingly strongly pectinate.

Habitat:
On rocks, lower intertidal and subtidal particularly on ± horizontal platforms,
often associate with a light covering of sand, abundant, widely distributed,
frequent and persistent in drift.
Similar species:
Sphaerococcus
coronopifolius is
darker in colour, generally larger and is rare in the intertidal; branching
in Sphaerococcus is more irregular and it does not have alternately second
branchlets.
