Research activities and field-work experience

2002.11-2005.10: Research Assistant of the project OASIS - OceAnic Seamounts, an Intergrated Study" funded by EU- Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, under the supervision of Dr. Bernd Christiansen from the Universitaet Hamburg. In charge of the Task "trophodynamics and ecological modelling of seamounts".

2001.09: Elaboration of the project "OASIS - OceAnic Seamounts, an Intergrated Study" submetido à UE- Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, under the coordination of Dr. Bernd Christiansen of the Universitaet Hamburg. Development of the Task "trophodynamics and ecological modelling of seamounts".

2001.01-2001.06: Research Assitant of the E.U project "BIOMARE: implementation and networking of large scale, long-term marine biodiversity research in Europe".

2001: Consultant for the ECOPATH module of the research project SIAP "Système d'information et d'analyse des pêches". Participation in the scientific meetings in Bissau (4-11.05.2001) and Dakar (27-31 .08.2001), where it was developed an ecological model of the Guiné-Bissau continental shelf, and written the respective reports.

2000.08-2000.12: Research Assistant of the Research Project "Integrated Management os coastal areas in the Azores - LIFE98NAT/P/5275", with the final goal of presenting management plans for some Sites with Community Importance (SCI) in the Azores.

2000.01: Elaboration of the research project "Marine protected areas in the Azores: effects on fish communities" under the supervision of Dr Ricardo Serrão Santos (DOP-UAç). Submitted for financing support to the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia.

1999.03-2000.02: Member of the scientific team of the LIFE-Nature research project "Integrated management of coastal and marine zones in the Azores", coordinated by Dr Luís Monteiro (DOP-UAç). Participation on the fieldwork, which consisted on marine biotope mapping and characterization of fish communities within 5 Sites of Community Interest (SCI). Preparation of the technical and scientific report focusing management plans for Marine Protected areas in the Azores.

1997.08-2000.07: Principal researcher of the project "Climatic effects on the ecology of coastal fishes: a translatitudinal and phenological approach, CLIPE". Major tasks include assistance to the project coordination, coordination of the feeding ecology task. Field work includes, fish sampling, fish visual census, rocky pool sampling, beach seine. Laboratorial work includes stomach contents identification, gonadal histology and microscopic analysis, otoliths reading and age determination, database construction, and data analysis. Data dissemination includes, official reports, manuscripts, papers and co-ordination of two undergraduate theses.

1997.12: Elaboration of the research project "Integrated management of coastal and marine zones in the Azores", under the supervision of Drs Luís Monteiro (DOP-UAç) and Ricardo Serrão Santos (DOP-UAç). Submitted for financing support to EU, LIFE-Nature 1998. Approved for financing by June 1998.

1997.07: Participation in the field work of the research project "Fishery Biology, Life History and Genetic Population Structure of Globally-distributed wreckfish, Polyprion americanus ", under the coordination of Dr. George R. Sedberry (Marine Resources Research Institute, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources). Fieldwork consisted on wreckfish tagging work onboard of the R/Y "Águas Vivas", as well as collection of DNA samples from commercially caught wreckfish.

1997.03: Selected to participate as a visiting scientist on one of the "Georges Bank - Predator Prey cruises" onboard of the R/V "Albatross IV". The study was funded by NOAA - Coastal Oceans Program, which is being carried out by the Food Chain Dynamics Investigation (FCDI) of the National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Fishery Science Center (NMFS-NFSC). Unfortunately, the cruise was canceled because of gear problems on the Ship.

1997.03-1997-07: Collaboration with the research project "Biology of some Macaronesian deep-sea commercial fish species" under the coordination of Dr Mário Rui Pinho (DOP-UAç). Fieldwork consisted on biological sampling of fish, collection of tissue samples for genetic studies and meristics of some deep fish species (Mora moro, Beryx decadactylus, Beryx splendens, Lepidopus caudatus, Helicolenus dactylopterus and Pontinus kuhlii).

1997.02-1997.03: Member of the scientific crew onboard the R/V Arquipélago during the demersal cruise surveys (ARQDAÇO-08-P97) conducted within the frame work of the research project "Design optimization and implementation of demersal survey cruises in the Macaronesian archipelagos - Study Contract DG-XIV 95/95", coordinated by Dr Gui Menezes (DOP-UAç). Participation on the experimental design of the surveys and on the overall fieldwork.

1997.01-1997.03: Started the elaboration the Memorandum about the state of the art of the fisheries research in the Azores, under the supervision of Dr. Gui Menezes (DOP-UAç). Work consisted on compilation and analysis of fisheries databases from 1947 to 1996.

1996-1997: Elaboration of the research project "Biology and bio-economic strategies for the management of the most important fish resources of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau (West-Africa)", under the supervision of Dr. Gui Menezes (DOP-UAç). Submitted for financing support to EU-DG-XII, Cooperation with third countries and international organizations (INCO-DC), Part C with the reference ERB3514PL973035. Refused for financing by March 1998 with the rate B.

1996.07-1996.12: Study of the feeding habits of demersal fish species of the Azores: forkbeard (Phycis phycis), alfonsinos (Beryx splendens and B. decadactylus), axillary seabream (Pagellus acarne), tope shark (Galeorhinus galeus), conger ell (Conger conger), silver scabbardfish (Lepidopus caudatus), black spot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo) and thornback ray (Raja clavata). Project coordinated by Dr Helder Marques da Silva (DOP-UAç).

1996.09-1996.11: Collaboration with the Aquarium of Genoa (Italy) providing technical and scientific support towards the realization of a project to renovate an exhibit representing a typical underwater environment around the Azores.

1996.07-1996.08: Participation on the fieldwork, on board of the R/Y "Águas Vivas", of the research project "Legislation of the Whale-watching in the Azores", under the coordination of Drs Ricardo Serrão Santos (DOP/UAç) and João Gonçalves (DOP/UAç).

1996.03-1996.05: Member of the scientific crew onboard the R/V Arquipélago during the demersal cruise surveys (ARQDAÇO-06-P96) conducted within the framework of the research project "Design optimization and implementation of demersal survey cruises in the Macaronesian archipelagos - Study Contract DG-XIV 95/95", coordinated by Dr Helder Marques da Silva (DOP-UAç). Participation on the experimental design of the surveys, participation on the design and optimization of the stomach-sampling program implemented for the first time during this survey, and the overall fieldwork.

1995.05-1995.09: Participation in the field work and elaboration of the reports of the research project "Bijagós Archipelago: Guinea-Bissau. Biology and Fisheries". Fieldwork and laboratorial procedures consisted on determination of physic, chemical parameters of the seawater, identification of major components of plankton, intertidal benthos sampling and identification of organisms, and characterization of the artisanal fisheries of the Bijagós Archipelago.

1995: Elaboration of the research project "Bijagós Archipelago: Guinea-Bissau. Biology and Fisheries". This project was an initiative of four students (Eduardo Esteves, Telmo Gomes, Ernesto Jardim and Tiago Teixeira), which interested both institution (Centro de Investigação Pesqueira Aplicada, Guinea-Bissau and UCTRA, University of the Algarve) and the Portuguese government (various Secretaries of State and Institutes).

1994-1995: Study of feeding ecology of blacktail comber ( Serranus atricauda ) from the Azores, under the coordination of Dr Ricardo Serrão Santos (DOP-UAç).

1994.03-1994.05: Member of the scientific crew onboard the R/V Arquipélago during the demersal cruise surveys (ARQDAÇO-02-P94) conducted within the frame work of the research project "Design optimization and implementation of demersal survey cruises in the Macaronesian Archipelagos, part I - Study Contract DG-XIV 94/034", coordinated by Dr Helder Marques da Silva (DOP-UAç). Fieldwork consisted of data collection during fishery experiments as well as biological sampling of fishes.

1994: Identification of mesopelagic fishes for determination of mercury concentrations. See Acknowledgements in: Monteiro, L.R.; V. Costa; R.W. Furness & R.S. Santos 1996. Mercury concentrations in prey fish indicate enhanced bioaccumulation in mesopelagic environments. Marine Ecology Progress Series 141: 21-25

1994: Participation in the overall work of the fish collection of the Azores, under the coordination of Dr Ricardo Serrão Santos (DOP-UAç).

1994: Participation in the fieldwork of the research project "Biology of marine turtles in the Azores Region", coordinated by Dr Alen Bolten (Center for Sea Turtle research, University of Florida). The fieldwork consisted in tagging and recapture of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) onboard of the R/Y "Águas Vivas".

Diving experience

Experienced with Scuba to 40 meters. Approximately 700 open ocean Scuba dives, including night-, cave-, wreck-, and photo-dives.

1998: License for operation with hyperbaric chambers.

1997.06: Achieved equivalence to C.M.A.S. International Diver Certificate P2.

1991.05: Scuba-dive course presented by the Portuguese Federation of Underwater Activities, achieved equivalence to C.M.A.S. (World Underwater Federation) International Certificate P1.
