7th International Bioerosion Workshop

The 7th International Bioerosion Workshop was held at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, University of Azores, in Faial Island, Azores, during September 18 to 23 2011.  It was an honor for me and Sérgio Ávila to host this workshop and continue with the tradition of this workshop series, 15 years after Richard Bromley and Ulla Asgard initiated this meeting in 1996 in Bornholm.

The main theme of the workshop was “the use of bioerosion as an indicator of marine ecosystem health“. Several talks during the first day of the workshop addressed the impact of climate change (increased seawater temperature and acidity) on bioerosion agents and processes and how bioerosion has been used, and can be used to assess and monitor reef and other environments for human and environmentally produced change.

Talks during the second day of workshop gave an overview of the evidence of bioerosion in the fossil record in Portugal. This included a short boat field trip from Horta harbour to Feteira harbour with the objective of showing some of the important geological features of Faial Island. During the third and last day of oral presentations, talks addressed micro- and macrobioerosion in the fossil record and recent environments.

groupphoto_200.jpgThe last two days of the workshop consisted of two field trips, one in Faial Island where we learned about the important features of the island; and a second field trip to Pico Island that included whale watching and a visit to Gruta das Torres (the longest lava tube in the Azores). Overall we had a very productive workshop where we had the opportunity to exchange knowledge, new concepts and ideas, and developed new collaborations with colleagues.  The field trips were a great opportunity to learn a little of the geology of these wonderful islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, while having fun with our colleagues and friends!
7th IBW participants, Sergio Avila and Ricardo Meireles are missing from the photo.
