Call for applications for a Postdoc research fellowship for developing habitat suitability models for deep-sea benthic species and biotopes in the Azores Project ATLAS (H2020 GA: 678760)

IMAR – Institute of Marine Research, is opening a call for one post-doctoral fellowship within the research project “ATLAS A Trans-Atlantic assessment and deep-water ecosystem-based spatial management plan for Europe”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the grant agreement 678760, with the duration of 12 months starting on October 2017, or as soon as the selection process is completed.

Field of research: Mathematical modelling applied to biological sciences. This position aims at developing habitat suitability models for deep-sea benthic species and biotopes in the Azores, under current and future climate scenarios. This post-doctoral fellowship will join a multidisciplinary research team to study different aspects of the biology and ecology of deep-water ecosystems in the Azores.

 Admission requirements: Candidates must hold a PhD degree in biology, marine biology or mathematic modelling applied to biological sciences, or a related field. Candidates must have proven experience in developing and fitting mathematical models to biological data, in modelling habitat suitability and species distribution, in geographic information systems, and in database maintenance and manipulation. Preference will be given to candidates with experience with Boosted Regression Tree, Random Forest and GAM/GLM modelling techniques. Experience with species archetype models (SAMs) would be a real plus. In addition, preference will be given to candidates with some background in deep-sea biodiversity studies, experience with deep-sea video analyses, a good record of scientific publications and experience in multidisciplinary international projects.

Work plan: The candidate will have the following specific responsibilities:

a) Collating existing relevant geomorphological, environmental and biological data for the Azores deep-sea;

b) Compile relevant environmental information under future climate and oceanographic conditions;

c) Development mathematical habitat suitability models for deep-sea species and biotopes in the Azores under current climate conditions;

d) Development mathematical models of the distribution of deep-sea species and biotopes in the Azores under future climate conditions;

e) Develop maps or other forms of visualization and support the marine Geographic Information System of the Azores;

f) Provide support with the preparation of project reports and writing of scientific publications on the results obtained.

Applicable laws and regulations: Law no. 40/2004, of 18 August (Statute of the Scientific Research Scholars); FCT Regulation for Studentships and Fellowships; Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources.

Workplace: The work will be developed at IMAR – Institute of Marine Research, hosted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceanography of the University of the Azores (DOP-UAc) in Horta (Faial Island), under the supervision of Dr. Telmo Morato and Dra Marina Carreiro-Silva.

Duration of the scholarship: The grant will last for 12 months, eventually renewed until the end of the project, commencing preferably on October 2017, or as soon as the selection process is completed.

Compensation: The research fellow will receive a monthly allowance of 1,495 €, in accordance to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) official table of fellowships ( The fellow will be covered by a personal insurance and voluntarily contribution to the national social security system, according to the Dec.-Lei nº40/49 from 1st February.

Selection criteria: The selection of candidates will be based on curriculum evaluation, taking into account the academic record and the demonstration of the capabilities listed in the admission requirements. Interviews may be conducted to better assess the capability of candidates.

Application submission: The call will be open from the 14th September 2017 to 4th October. Applications must be submitted by email by sending the following documents: Letter of motivation with justification of skills for the position, detailed Curriculum Vitae and copy of university degrees. Failure to submit the requested documents will be reason for exclusion of the application. Applications should be sent by email to Dr Telmo Morato (, cc for Sandra Silva (

Evaluation committee: Dr João Gonçalves (President of the committee), Dr Marina Carreiro Silva (vogal) and Dr Telmo Morato (vogal).

Notification of results: The final results will be presented in a list ranked by the candidates’ final scores, to be sent by e-mail to all applicants. The successful candidate will be notified via email. If the decision is unfavourable, the candidates have 10 working days to appeal. The jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship based on the adequateness of the applications.
