A position is open for the granting of a post-doctoral scholarship under the strategic program UID / MAR / 04292/2013-MARE, allocated to IMAR financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology FCT / MCTES through national funds (PIDDAC). The scholarship will start scheduled for August 15, 2017 and lasts four and a half months.

Field of study

Fisheries Stock Assessment. This research grant aims to carry out an in-depth review of the independent and dependent fisheries information available at DOP databases summarizing the baseline information required as input for the assessment of the major stocks assessed under the ICES. The main task consists of the detailed analyses of the time series of relative abundance of the commercial fishing and of the research surveys by stock and species clusters including a revision of the state of the art of the methodologies used for standardization. We intend to analyze the reliability of these standard time series for stock assessment. The task should define a standard procedure for this type of analyses for target and non-target species.

Admission requirements:

Candidates must hold a PhD in marine science or related fields (Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology and Statistics) and have proven experience in the field of fisheries stock assessment (or ecological data analysis) with preference given to candidates with high practical experience of generalized linear modeling approach applied to the analysis of abundance indices. Candidates must possess sufficient scientific independence for this type of R-environment analyses, as evidenced by the record of scientific publications. Facility to write in English is considered a benefit as well as a good record of publications in Fisheries Stock Assessment and a good ability to work in a team.

Work plan:

The candidate will have specific functions:

a) Collection of commercial fishing data;

b) Collection of research cruise data;

c) Construction of databases of relative abundance (or proxies) and relevant explanatory variables for demersal/deep-water stocks;

d) Exploration of generalized linear models (GLMs) and extensions (GAM, GLMM, ZIP, etc.) for standardization of abundance indexes;

e) Write working papers and scientific articles on the results obtained.

Place of work:

The work will be developed in the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores, in Horta (Island of Faial), under the scientific guidance of Doctor Mário Rui Pinho and Helder Marques da Silva.

Duration of the scholarship:

The scholarship will last for 4.5 months, starting in July 2017.


The amount of the scholarship corresponds to € 1495, according to the table of values of grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. In the Country ( Voluntary Social Security (for presentation of proof of payment) and Personal Accident Insurance are added to this amount. The monthly remuneration and voluntary  insurance will be paid monthly by bank transfer.

Selection criteria:

The selection of candidates will be based on the curricular evaluation, taking into account the academic background and professional experience described in the admission requirements. Interviews can be conducted to better assess candidates' ability.

Notification of results:

The final results will be presented in a list ranked by the candidates’ final scores, to be sent by e-mail to all applicants. The successful candidate will be notified via email. The jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship based on the quality of the applications.
