Call for a fixed-term researcher contract to study different aspects of the biology and ecology of cold-water coral ecosystems of the North-Atlantic (ATLAS / MERCES)

A call for applications for a fixed-term research contract is now open within the funded EU H2020 projects “ATLAS - A TransAtlantic Assessment and deepwater ecosystembased spatial management plan for Europe” (grant agreement 678760) and “MERCES - Marine Ecosystem Restoration in Changing European Seas” (grant agreement No 689518) and implemented by IMAR – Instituto do Mar, based in the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, University of the Azores. The selected candidate will sign a temporary contract, for uncertain resolute term, according to the code of the Portuguese labour, article 140º, nº3, expected to start on September 1st 2017.

The candidate will also assist the project PI with the management of the project, mentoring of students and other project tasks.

Admission requirements: Candidates must hold:

  1. The candidates must have a PhD degree in ecology, marine biology, or other relevant science;

  2. At least 5 years of experience as an independent researcher;

  3. Proven background in the biology and ecology of cold-water coral ecosystems;

  4. Experience in laboratory experimental work related to the text of this call, namely in the set-up of aquaria experimental systems, and cold-water coral husbandry, and on histology and light and scanning electron microscopy techniques.

  5. A good publication record in the field of the call, namely the impacts of climate change on coral ecophysiology and calcium carbonate cycling, coral taxonomy and life history traits;

  6. Exemplary performance in oral and written communication in English.

  7. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and good knowledge of work at sea and with marine robotic techniques applied to coral research.

  8. Preference will be given to candidates with experience on supervising Master and PhD students and the capacity to work in multidisciplinary teams, illustrated by participation and leadership in research projects and scientific cruises.

  9. Preference will be given to candidates with good knowledge of deep-sea ecosystems in the Azores region.

  1. Aquaria-based studies on the impact of global climate change on the physiology of cold-water corals;

  2. Collection and analyses of video imagery data for the characterization of deep-sea habitats;

  3. Taxonomic studies on the benthic megafauna specimens collected during cruises and  specimens in IMAR-UAzores biological reference collection;

  4. Studies on cold-water coral life history traits, including age, growth and reproduction;

  5. Develop methodologies and tools for the assisted regeneration of coral gardens, including coral transplantation techniques and artificial substrates for coral larvae settlement.
